A FREE CHOSEN PATH RESOURCE
Begin with
the whole passage.
A simple guide for personal study or a first group conversation. Allow around 25–35 minutes. Bring your Bible, something to write with and a willingness to listen.
Choose a short, complete passage from the Bible. Read the surrounding chapter so you can see where it fits. This guide helps you ask careful questions; it does not supply an interpretation of a particular passage.
What is happening here?
Read the passage twice. Notice who is speaking, who is being addressed and what happens immediately before and after it.
- What kind of writing is this: narrative, poetry, a letter or another form?
- What can you learn about the setting from the passage itself?
What do you actually notice?
Write down three observations before drawing conclusions. Look for repeated words, contrasts, questions, commands or changes in the scene.
- Which details seem central to the passage?
- What surprises you, and what remains unclear?
How do the details fit together?
Describe the main point in your own words. Check that your explanation fits the whole passage. Distinguish what the text says from what you are assuming.
- What evidence in the passage supports your understanding?
- What would you like to check with a trusted teacher or study resource?
What deserves your attention?
Consider how this passage might shape your understanding, attitudes or actions. Be specific and avoid forcing every detail into a direct instruction.
- What is one thing to reflect on this week?
- What is one thoughtful response you could put into practice?
Make room for another perspective.
Invite each person to share one observation and one question. Allow people to pass. Ask where each interpretation comes from in the text, and note questions that need further study.
Close by summarising what you have understood together and what you will revisit. A useful conversation does not require every question to be settled immediately.
